Jammu Tawi, Apr 9 – Tensions escalated outside the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Wednesday as Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Mehraj Malik was assaulted by BJP legislators, with videos of the incident now circulating widely on social media. The confrontation occurred after heated exchanges inside the Assembly, where Malik clashed not only with BJP MLAs but also with PDP legislator Waheed Para during a tumultuous legislative session.
The chaos began after the BJP accused Malik of making derogatory remarks against Hindus during media interactions. BJP MLA Vikram Randhawa lashed out at Malik, demanding strict action and invoking the Public Safety Act (PSA). “He has abused Hindus… We will not tolerate this… He said ‘Hindu tilak laga ke rape karta hai’… We will give him an answer,” Randhawa stated to reporters outside the Assembly.
Randhawa continued his criticism, calling Malik a “two-bit MLA” with a “cheap mindset” and accusing him of targeting the BJP and the Hindu community. He further demanded that Malik undergo a Narco test and urged the Speaker to suspend him from the Assembly, labeling his daily remarks as “nonsense.”
In a particularly charged moment caught on camera, Randhawa was heard saying, “Just because he became an MLA, he thinks he can abuse Hindus? We’ll teach him a lesson today.”
The situation inside the Assembly worsened as PDP workers in the visitors’ gallery clashed with Malik over his past comments about former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed. The disruptions forced the Assembly to be adjourned for three hours, largely due to the government’s refusal to allow an adjournment motion to discuss the Waqf Act.
Outside the Assembly, BJP MLAs staged a sit-in protest, accusing the state government of avoiding discussions on crucial issues such as unemployment and the regularization of daily wagers. Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma condemned the government’s actions, stating, “The government is running away from discussion and trying to divert attention from real issues. For the third day in a row, MLAs created a ruckus in the Assembly over the Waqf Amendment Bill, which has now become an Act. They want to protect land jihadis… The common masses have seen the true face of the NC.”
The incident has intensified political tensions in the region, highlighting the deep divisions within the Assembly and between political parties. (Agencies)
