Srinagar, Dec 23: Jammu and Kashmir witnessed an improvement in minimum temperatures on Monday, thanks to a nightlong cloud cover. Srinagar recorded a low of minus 3.6°C, while other areas like Gulmarg and Pahalgam saw minimum temperatures of minus 4.8°C and minus 5°C, respectively. The Meteorological Department predicts this improvement will continue for the next two days before another cold spell affects Kashmir.
Despite the rise in temperatures, the harsh winter conditions continue to disrupt daily life in the Valley. Issues such as frozen water taps, slippery roads, and power shortages remain widespread, affecting residents’ routines. The ongoing 40-day period of severe cold, known as “Chillai Kalan,” began on December 21 and will last until January 30. During this period, many water bodies, including rivers and lakes, have started freezing, complicating transportation via boats.
In response to the ongoing difficulties, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah announced that he would cancel all his engagements outside the Valley and remain in Srinagar to personally monitor the functioning of the Power Department and other essential services. “In light of the severe cold spell in the Kashmir valley and resultant difficulties with water & electricity supply, I have decided to cancel my forthcoming programmes in Jammu & station myself in Srinagar for the next week to personally monitor the functioning of the Power department & other important departments,” the CM wrote on X.
In other regions, Jammu city recorded a minimum temperature of 6.7°C, while Katra town registered 7°C. Batote, Banihal, and Bhaderwah experienced sub-zero temperatures, further contributing to the chill across the region.
