Srinagar, Dec 8: The Meteorological Department has predicted rain and snowfall over the higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir in the next 24 hours due to a Western Disturbance (WD) expected to hit the region on Sunday evening. According to officials at the Meteorological Centre in Srinagar, the weather will remain generally cloudy, with light rain possible in some areas of the Jammu division and light rain or snow over higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley from the evening of December 8 to the morning of December 9. Independent weather forecaster Faizan Arif stated that light snowfall is expected in the higher reaches of the Kashmir Valley, particularly towards the evening on Sunday. He also mentioned that a minor rain spell is possible in parts of the Jammu region, including Doda, Kishtwar, Kathua, and Ramban districts, with the possibility of light snow in southern Kashmir by the morning of December 9. The weather is expected to be partly cloudy to sunny in the afternoon.
The forecast suggests dry weather on December 10, followed by a minor snow spell in the higher reaches of central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district and Bandipora district in north Kashmir on December 11. Another weak WD is expected to bring light rain or snow to some areas of the Kashmir Valley on December 12, with mostly dry conditions until December 17.
Meanwhile, the night temperature in the Kashmir Valley has improved but remains below freezing point. Gulmarg, the coldest place in the region, recorded a temperature of -3.4°C, while Srinagar’s minimum temperature was -0.5°C, slightly above normal. Pahalgam recorded -2.8°C, and Qazigund saw -1.0°C, while Kokernag experienced a low of 0.4°C. Kupwara’s night temperature significantly improved, reaching 0.4°C.
