Washington:  US President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Kash Patel, an Indian-American lawyer and former national security official, to serve as the next Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The announcement was made on Saturday via Trump’s social media platform, Truth Social.

“Kashyap ‘Kash’ Patel is an exceptional lawyer and investigator who embodies the ‘America First’ vision,” Trump said. “He has dedicated his career to uncovering corruption, upholding justice, and protecting the American people.”

Patel, 44, a close ally of Trump, gained prominence for his role in exposing the so-called “Russia Hoax” during the investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. elections. He previously served as Chief of Staff to the Acting U.S. Secretary of Defense and held key roles in intelligence and counterterrorism during Trump’s first term.

Trump lauded Patel’s extensive experience, noting his work on over 60 jury trials and leadership at the Department of Defense and National Security Council. “Kash will bring back fidelity, bravery, and integrity to the FBI,” Trump stated, adding that Patel would work alongside incoming Attorney General Pam Bondi to tackle crime, dismantle criminal gangs, and combat human and drug trafficking.

Patel was born to Gujarati parents who emigrated from East Africa and grew up in Queens, New York. After completing law school, he worked as a public defender and later as an international terrorism prosecutor at the Department of Justice. He played a pivotal role in investigating counterterrorism operations and leading the GOP-backed probe into alleged misconduct in the Russia investigation.

The nomination highlights Trump’s focus on reshaping federal law enforcement. Patel has been outspoken in criticizing the U.S. bureaucracy, accusing it of fostering a “two-tier system of justice” and calling out corruption within the federal government under the Biden administration. He is also a strong advocate for U.S.-India relations and has praised efforts to counter Chinese aggression and strengthen economic ties between the two nations, which he claims have weakened under the current administration.

If confirmed, Patel would become the highest-ranking Indian-American in Trump’s administration and lead the FBI during a critical time, with Trump pledging reforms aimed at restoring public trust in federal law enforcement. Patel, an avid ice hockey player and youth coach, has described his career as one driven by public service and accountability.
