Jammu Tawi: Aspirants in Jammu staged a protest demanding age relaxation and the rescheduling of the upcoming constable examination, set to fill 4,002 vacancies in the Jammu and Kashmir Police. Over 5.59 lakh candidates are scheduled to take the exams, which will be held on December 1, December 8, and December 22.
Indu Kanwal Chib, Chairperson of the Jammu and Kashmir Services Selection Recruitment Board (SSRB), confirmed that the exams will take place at 856 centres across 20 districts. The largest number of candidates (54,296) will be from Jammu district. The first exam, for executive, armed, and SDRF constable posts, will be on December 1, with 2,62,863 candidates. On December 8, exams for constable (telecommunications) will be held for 1,67,609 candidates, and the final exam, for constable (photographer) positions, will take place on December 22 with 1,28,663 candidates.
This year, the exam will feature new security measures, including male and female gazetted officers serving as “frisking supervisors” and the use of videography to ensure transparency. The Chief Secretary, Atal Dulloo, emphasized the need for thorough staffing, proper inspection of centres, and strict anti-cheating measures to ensure the smooth conduct of the exams.
Amidst the preparations, a group of youth, who were ineligible for the constable positions due to age restrictions, held a demonstration. They demanded age relaxations and a rescheduling of the exam. Mehran Anjum Mir, a youth leader and social activist, criticized the delays in the examination process, which prevented them from applying. The protesters urged the government and officials to consider their requests for age relaxations for both constable and sub-inspector posts.
In addition to the constable exams, the SSRB announced a recruitment drive for 669 sub-inspectors in the Jammu and Kashmir Police Department, with applications starting on December 3 and ending on January2, 2025.
