    Civic Body Sans Civic Sense

It is really unfortunate that Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), which is looking after the civic issues of Jammu City is itself lacking civic sense as the same was confirmed after its Commissioner asked his subordinates to timely remove the construction material and other related waste lying near the construction sites of different projects taken up by this civic body.

There is no doubt that under LG Manoj Sinha’s administration various development projects saw the light of the day in Jammu and its adjoining areas with JMC playing a lead role in realizing these one after another but the issue which the JMC Commissioner has raised after physically verifying the lacunae is of utmost importance. As there are various places in Jammu especially the walled city where the construction and waste material could be seen lying alongside the roads with no one taking pain to remove the same to clear the pathways and roads for convenience of the passersby and commuters on vehicles.

It is good that the JMC Commissioner has intervened and asked the concerned officials to clear the clutter and ensure city roads become hassle-free for the commuters.

It is pertinent to mention that even after the completion of projects whether sanitation, electricity or water supply the debris if any or the minor minerals used for the construction remains on the roads for months together, which often leads to inconvenience to the people and also irk the passersby because it becomes nuisance and also defaces the looks of the area.

It is therefore necessary to implement the directions made by the JMC Commissioner in the aforesaid context in letter and spirit because no one has the right to spoil the looks of the localities in Jammu because of their lethargy and complacency.

It is good that the Commissioner has taken the cognizance in the matter and asked the officials to penalize the offenders whether they are government contractors or even a private party because in Jammu, the people also take such things very lightly and often place the construction material on roads and streets during the constructions of the houses or other establishments.

The need of the time is to streamline this issue and stop allowing all such entities to take things for granted because to make Jammu a real Smart City, the stakeholders whether people, government officials, contractors and others will have to go an extra mile by acting judiciously and with full responsibility while carrying out such constructions, and any kind of delinquency should be taken as very seriously by the concerned civic body as ‘let it be’ culture will do no good to Jammu and its people.
