    Jashn-e-Jamhuriyat: J&K’s New Dawn

    BY Stuti

The 2024 J&K assembly elections are undoubtedly the best representation of Jashn-e Jamhuriyat, where the citizens have come forward with resilience to get their voices  heard, with remarkable gender diversity across the polling process due to 27.90%  increase in the number of female voters. Erstwhile militancy a ected regions have also  heartily embraced the democratic fervour, which reflects their growing confidence in  the electoral process. Since the abrogation of Article 370, the region has seen massive  changes in terms of peace, security, and the restoration of normalcy. Reopening of  educational institutions, revival of the tourism industry, improvements in healthcare, electricity, are some major parameters that prove the region’s consistent progress in the  right direction.

There have been countless developments towards national interest since 5 August  2019, be it decrease in terror activities, improvement in security, and now finally the  restoration of a democratic administration that represents public demand. The show  must go on, now that we have witnessed a shift in the governance dynamics.

What are the next steps though? The turnout that stands at 63.88% proves that the  voters have high hopes from the new government in terms of a better and brighter future  for the youth, welfare of the citizens, and finally the restoration of domicile rights and  statehood.

A significant responsibility lies with the new administration to work in the best interests  of all people: women, youth, and minorities. Additionally, moving forward it will be even  more crucial to maintain the right balance across Jammu and Kashmir, taking a more  pragmatic approach for the shared interests of a cross-section of supporters for  di erent representatives in both the regions, not only for governance in the state, but  also in maintaining a stable relationship with the central government in Delhi. With a  noticeable divide in the voters’ choice, policy representation will have to be even more  inclusive now in order to check all points while working towards betterment, including  bringing economic stability, maintaining security, and avoiding political alienation.   Jashn-e-Jamhuriyat is not just a manifestation of celebrating a democratic festival after  a decade, but a proclamation of the people’s faith in the process and their stance to  contribute their bit in favour of national interest. Now, it is upto the administration to be  in synergy with the LG to understand issues at the ground-level and take planned steps  for a holistic development. At the same time, the picture for a truly representative  government for all along with candidates nominated by the LG is still in question, and  will only be clear when we see the actual outcome of the process. It is time to honour  the people’s decision for the prosperity of the paradise on earth.
