After winning gold in the SL3 classification at the 2024 Paris Paralympics, emerging Indian champion Nitesh Kumar’s first call was to 2021 champion Pramod Bhagat. Nitesh had pledged to keep the prestigious title within India after Bhagat was unable to defend due to suspension.
The determined Nitesh battled back from a life-changing train accident during his studies to focus on para-sports inspired by other champions. Taking up badminton for relaxation, he was spotted for his talent by Bhagat who boosted his confidence. Nitesh’s fitness routine drew inspiration from Virat Kohli’s dedication.
In a dramatic finals against Briton Daniel Bethell, Nitesh kept his nerves and played a defensive strategy seeing conditions favored his opponent. He withstood intense pressure to edge out Bethell and clinch the gold, fulfilling his promise to Bhagat. The tactful victory reinforced India’s dominance in this category.
An elated Nitesh said it was important for him to retain the title in India for Bhagat who hadgroomed him. Their bond and Bhagat’s Pride in his success motivated Nitesh to greater heights. The defending champion’s guidance has not only helped Nitesh accomplish his Paralympic dream but also established an Indian legacy in SL3 classification.
