India’s middle-order firepower under scrutiny ahead of T20 World Cup
With the crucial Super 8 stage of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup set to begin, India will hope for their middle-order batsmen to step up and provide the much needed firepower in the death overs. As the tournament progresses to the Caribbean islands, big hitting abilities of players occupying positions 5-8 will be under intense scanner.
While the top order has generally delivered for skipper Rohit Sharma’s men, questions remain over who can accelerate the scoring and take the team to a big total in the latter half of the innings. Key all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Ravindra Jadeja will have important roles to play but both are yet to strike form with the bat so far.
An analysis of performances since 2020 throws light on India’s relative struggles in middle-overs runs and six hitting compared to other top teams. Teams like West Indies and England have been far more productive in accelerating scoring through positions 5-8. Among Indian batsmen occupying these slots, Hardik and Jadeja will hope for better contributions going forward.
It is also interesting to note that despite some concerns, India remain one of the best when it comes to scoring in the death overs globally. But they have relied heavily on the heroics of Suryakumar Yadav and previously Virat Kohli to boost the run rate late on. With these batting stars not always guaranteeing success, a more collective effort will be needed to challenge for the coveted title.
As the venues shift to the small boundaries and true pitches of West Indies, maximizing runs in the slog overs could well decide teams’ fate. India will hope their middle-order batsmen can rise to the challenge and deliver when it matters the most. With the tournament now entering its business end, their performance will be scrutinized like never before.
