Punjab seeks help from Centre to halt deportation of 700 Indian students from Canada

Chandigarh, June 07: After a hue and cry by the parents of hundreds of students, who went to Canada on study visas and facing deportation for producing fake admission offer letters!

The NRI Affairs Minister of , Kuldip Singh Dhaliwal on Tuesday, sought an early intervention of External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in the case of 700 Indian students facing deportation from Canada.

Dhaliwal also sought an appointment to meet with Jaishankar to brief him on the issue in detail.

As many as 700 Indian students, mainly from Punjab, face deportation from Canada after authorities discovered fake “admission offer letters” to educational institutions.

When these students applied for permanent residency in Canada in March, the situation came to light.

“I have also requested time to meet with EAM so that the entire matter can be personally brought to the attention of the GOI,” Dhaliwal said.

“These (700) students are innocent and have been cheated by the clique of fraudsters,” Dhaliwal wrote in his to the EAM.

“I shall be extremely grateful if you personally look into the matter again and take up the matter with concerned agencies including the High Commission of Canada and the government of Canada so that these students can be saved from deportation,” Dhaliwal wrote.

According to him, these students should not be deported and should be granted work permits based on their visas.

Dhaliwal also urged Punjab residents to check the details of the college and the track record of the travel agent before sending their children abroad for studies.
