Share for manufacturing Lithium-ion batteries for vehicles, says govt to ISRO

New Delhi: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has given many reasons to feel proud. Its achievements have established the country as a forerunner in the field of space, along with pioneers like NASA, ESA, Roscosmos and China Space Administration. In another move, the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre – ISRO's major space research centre – has successfully developed and tested an indigenous technology to manufacture high-power batteries for automobiles.

Over half a dozen major automobile companies like Mahindra Renault, Hyundai, Nissan and Tata Motors, along with battery manufacturers and public sector undertakings like High Energy Batteries, BHEL and Indian Oil have approached ISRO for the technology, as they are keen to produce the indigenous Lithium-ion batteries.

Now, the Government of India has intervened and asked ISRO to permit the interested players, including those from the private sector, get access to the technology for mass production of Lithium-Ion batteries for electric vehicles.

As per a report in the Times of India (TOI), ISRO will prepare a framework in order to make this process smooth.
