Parrikar resigns as Minister

NEW DELHI : Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar, who has been  appointed Chief Minister of Goa, today resigned from the Union Cabinet.  Mr Parrikar submitted his resignation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, sources in the Ministry said.

In a swift political development, Mr Parrikar was deputed to Goa by the ruling BJP's central leadership after the party fell short of majority in the state assembly elections.

Parrikar quickly managed the support of smaller parties and independents in his favour and staked claim to form the next government with the backing of 21 MLAs.

Later, he was appointed as the new Chief Minister of Goa. Parrikar will take oath as Chief Minister tomorrow evening at 1715 hours, said the sources.
