Jammu Tawi, July 25: Amid the worsening power crisis by the day, the Jammu region’s central workshop is flooded with big number of damaged power distribution transformers of all capacities right from 25 KVA to 630 KVA which has overburdened the main workshop of the region beyond its repairing capacity, reliable sources informed.

They informed that due to “sudden spurt” in the number damaged transformers from different areas of Jammu region, the central workshop is not able to repair the damaged power distribution transformers to meet the demand.

“On an average, more than forty (40) damaged transformers from different areas of Jammu region are brought to the central workshop at Narwal on daily basis,” sources informed The Northlines,“ while wishing not to be named.

More worrying is the fact that the central workshop has exhausted its quota of emergency store bank.

This may worsen the power scenario in the coming days as the central workshop is not able to repair the damaged transformers as per the demand and the emergency quota has also been exhausted, sources said.

“The department had around 400 to 500 ready transformers in its storage bank but due sudden rise in demand and rising number of damaged power distribution transformers by the day, the storage bank has now only around 150 readily available transformers,” sources informed The Northlines.

“The central workshop has the capacity to repair only 8 to 10 transformers per day but the number of damaged transformers is almost five times more than our repairing capacity,” they said adding, “due to this the department is facing problems in meeting the demand”.

The central workshop doesn’t have the capacity to repair such big number of damaged transformers, they said.

There are Twelve (12) divisions of the Power Development Department (PDD) and each division has its own workshop for repairing the damaged power distribution transformers, sources said.

“The power demand has increased suddenly but the main problem which we are facing is that a damaged transformer takes atleast 2 days for repairing,” Gurmeet Singh, a senior PDD official told the Northlines.

“During summer season, a damaged transformer is repaired in a day but in monsoon season it takes atleast 2 days,” Singh said.

In the central workshop, only those transformers are brought from different of Jammu which are not being repaired at the respective divisions.

“The repairing capacity, technology and also the manpower of workshops in all the divisions is far less than the central workshop,” sources said adding, “the divisions have the capacity to repair a mere 3 to 4 transformers a day”.

Many damaged power distribution transformers having capacity of 25 KVA, 63 KVA, 100 KVA, 250 KVA and 630 KVA have awaiting repairs at the central workshop, sources informed.
