2 National Guard Members Shot Near White House in Targeted Attack; Suspect in Custody

WASHINGTON, Nov 27 — Two National Guard members were shot just blocks from the White House on Wednesday in what authorities described as a “targeted ambush.” The suspect, who also sustained non-life-threatening injuries, is in custody, police said.

DC Police Executive Assistant Chief Jeffrey Carroll said video footage showed the assailant rounding a corner and immediately opening fire on the troops near a metro station. At least one Guard member returned fire, though it remains unclear whether the suspect was struck by troops or law enforcement.

Initial reports from West Virginia Gov. Patrick Morrisey wrongly suggested the troops had died, but his office later said their conditions were still unconfirmed.

Other National Guard personnel rushed to the scene after hearing gunfire and restrained the shooter. Investigators say no additional suspects are being sought.

The attack triggered an immediate response from the Trump administration, which deployed an additional 500 National Guard members to Washington. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the order came directly from President Donald Trump. Nearly 2,200 troops were already operating in the city as part of a joint task force.

Witnesses described panic as gunshots rang out and people fled the area. Social media videos showed first responders administering CPR to one of the injured soldiers on a sidewalk littered with broken glass.

Police cordoned off the scene as Secret Service, ATF agents and National Guard troops secured the area. A helicopter landed on the National Mall as part of the emergency response.

In a statement from Florida, Trump said the gunman “will pay a very steep price” and praised the National Guard, military personnel and law enforcement officers. Vice President JD Vance, speaking at Fort Campbell, urged prayers for the wounded and noted the motive remains unknown.

More than 300 West Virginia National Guard members were sent to Washington in August. While most recently returned home, about 160 voluntarily extended their deployment through the end of the year.

A federal judge last week ordered an end to the broader troop deployment but delayed enforcement for 21 days, allowing time for removal or appeal. Meanwhile, Guard members continue patrolling neighbourhoods, transit hubs, checkpoints and public events as the investigation unfolds. (Agencies)
