Why close sports facilities on holidays?

Conventionally, J&K used to lag in terms of sports achievements with only a handful of players shining in the national and global platforms. However, the recent push for sports development across the country has positively impacted sportspersons in the region, with an increasing number of players now winning medals and recognition.

To continue this momentum, certain practical steps need to be taken to ensure athletes have access to the training they need, every day of the week, whether it’s day or night, or even a public holiday.

Unfortunately, sports facilities in the region continue to follow the same schedule as government offices, leading to unnecessary closures on holidays. This complacency is detrimental to the growth of aspiring players who deserve round-the-clock access to facilities to refine their skills. For instance, at MA Stadium, all indoor and outdoor sports facilities are closed on holidays, with the lights also turned off. This hampers the ability of athletes, especially students balancing academics and sports, to train effectively. Extended access to these facilities during holidays would significantly benefit sports fraternity, allowing players more time for rigorous training and better preparation for higher-level competitions. While national policies are working towards promoting sports, regional governments must also play their part in transforming the sports culture.

Relying on outdated practices will only continue to hinder athletes’ progress and limit their potential. The solution lies in changing the mindset and ensuring dedicated coaches are available to work with athletes during odd hours and holidays. These coaches should be given added incentives to foster enthusiasm and commitment to the sport.

The benefits of making sports facilities accessible year-round are immense in terms of talent development and nurturing a thriving sports culture. For sure, anyone having even the slightest connection with sports in J&K or even the sports lovers will fully agree with this notion to ensure round the clock and year-round training facilities for the players of the UT.

Those sitting at helm should ponder over the issue and must come up with necessary changes in training schedules and facilities to ensure that sportspersons from the region can also make a significant mark in the national and international sports arenas.
