Western disturbance to bring rain, snowfall in North India: IMD

New Delhi, Dec 6: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast that a fresh Western Disturbance will affect the Western Himalayan region and adjoining plains of northwest India starting December 8, bringing light to moderate rainfall and snowfall.

The IMD stated that the disturbance is expected to cause snowfall over the Western Himalayas and light, isolated rainfall over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and West Uttar Pradesh on December 8 and 9.

Additionally, a cyclonic circulation in the Equatorial Indian Ocean is likely to lead to the formation of a low-pressure area over the central Bay of Bengal around December 7. This system will move west-northwestward, reaching the Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coast by December 12. Heavy rainfall is expected over coastal Tamil Nadu on December 11 and 12, with isolated rainfall likely in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema on December 12.

The IMD also issued a warning of dense fog in isolated pockets of Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura until December 9. Dense fog is also expected over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Uttar Pradesh from December 7 to 10, as well as over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, and Bihar from December 8 to 10.

Cold wave conditions are expected in isolated pockets of North Rajasthan between December 10 and 12. The IMD also predicts a gradual drop in temperatures across the country, with minimum temperatures expected to fall by 2–3°C over East India in the coming days and by 3–5°C in West India over the next five days.
