Vice Admiral Arti Sarin on Tuesday scripted history by becoming the first woman officer to assume charge as Director General of the Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS).
With an illustrious career spanning over 38 years in the Indian Navy, Sarin brings with her vast experience and expertise in medical administration and healthcare delivery in hostile terrains. Prior to her new appointment, she has held several leadership roles including Director General of Medical Services (Navy), Director General of Medical Services (Air Force) and Director & Commandant of the Armed Forces Medical College in Pune.
As DGAFMS, Sarin will be responsible for framing policies related to medical services for the entire armed forces. An alumna of AFMC Pune, she is a gold medalist in radiation oncology and has undergone advanced training in gamma knife surgery from the University of Pittsburgh in the US.
Her appointment is a significant milestone as it breaks gender stereotypes within the armed forces. With her vast experience and proven track record, Sarin is expected to strengthen medical infrastructure and services for India's soldiers.
