New Delhi, November 17, 2024 – Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reacted to the movie Sabarmati Report, which focuses on the 2002 Godhra train-burning incident, stating that a “fake narrative can persist only for a limited period of time” and that the truth will eventually emerge. Modi’s comments were made in response to a post on X (formerly Twitter) that praised the movie for uncovering the “important truth” behind the tragedy, which was a significant event during his tenure as Gujarat’s Chief Minister.
The user who posted the comment highlighted how the incident, which led to the deaths of 59 passengers on the Sabarmati Express, was politicized by certain groups aiming to defame Modi. The post claimed that the incident was used as a political tool to tarnish the image of the then Chief Minister, referring to Modi as the target of a “vested-interest group.”
In his response, Modi endorsed the sentiments expressed in the post, saying, “Well said. It is good that this truth is coming out, and that too in a way common people can see it.” He further added, “A fake narrative can persist only for a limited period of time. Eventually, the facts will always come out!”
The Sabarmati Express was set on fire in Godhra, Gujarat, on February 27, 2002, while it was carrying Hindu pilgrims returning from Ayodhya. The Gujarat Police blamed a Muslim mob for the attack, while others have disputed this, suggesting it could have been an accident or mishandling. The incident sparked widespread violence across the state, with the aftermath continuing to be a subject of political debate.
