Jammu lost a philanthropist and a tireless social worker in the passing of Dr. Kewal Krishan Gupta, who devoted over 65 years of his life selflessly treating the poor and underprivileged people of Jammu and Kashmir. Born on August 8, 1933, in Jammu, he was the son of Dr. Lal Chand Gupta, the pioneer behind the establishment of the renowned Gupta Eye Lotion Clinic at City Chowk in 1931, and Beera Devi.
After completing his graduation, Dr. Gupta had to leave his further studies to take charge of the free eye clinic set up by his father to serve the poor. Long queues at his clinic were a regular sight, especially during eye flu seasons. His clinic became synonymous with affordable and free eye care for people from all walks of life and continued to serve the needy until his last days. The citizens of Jammu fondly remember him for his simplicity, humility, and compassionate service.
The humble eye clinic played a pivotal role in providing relief not only for eye ailments but also for minor health issues like the flu. There is hardly a family in Jammu that has not visited his clinic during his lifetime. Even during the current eye flu outbreak, many poor and underprivileged people still visit the clinic daily, only to be saddened to hear of his passing.
A CENTRE OF SERVICE
The clinic, a centre for low-cost or free treatment, has been a beacon of hope for over half a century. Dr. Gupta remained actively involved in running the facility, rendering invaluable medical aid to those in need. Following his passing, he continues to be remembered for the yeoman’s service he provided.
The Gupta family, originally from Ghoregali in the Sialkot region (pre-Partition), shifted to Jammu in 1931. Guided by a strong sense of public spirit and social commitment, Dr. Lal Chand Gupta established the “Gupta Eye Lotion Clinic” at City Chowk, which gradually earned widespread popularity. The clinic was always bustling with patients, attracted by the dedication and humane approach of both Dr. Lal Chand and later Dr. Kewal Krishan Gupta, who followed in his father’s footsteps with unwavering commitment.
AN EXAMPLE OF SERVICE
Dr. Lal Chand Gupta had a deep spiritual inclination, and his mother had instructed him to serve humanity unconditionally. This guiding principle of “service to mankind is true worship” became the family’s motto, and it remains alive through their ongoing social service. Dr. Kewal Krishan Gupta embodied this spirit throughout his life and is remembered today on his third death anniversary.
Although Dr. Gupta is no longer with us, his selfless service has left an indelible mark on society. He became an enduring icon of humanity, humility, and resilience. A simple and humble man, Dr. Gupta’s life is a testament to the extraordinary impact a “common man” can have through dedication and compassion.
A LASTING LEGACY
His legacy lives on through his family. His elder son, Dr. D.P. Gupta, M.S. (Eye), is a senior consultant eye surgeon, and his younger son, Ravinder Gupta, is an engineer. The family continues to uphold the values and mission set by Dr. Gupta, assisting the poor and needy in whatever way they can.
Dr. Gupta was known for his kindness, benevolence, and empathy, treating every human being equally, regardless of caste, color, or creed. His relentless service earned him widespread respect and love. He held positions such as President and Executive Member in many prestigious organizations, including Akhil Bhartiya Mahajan Shiromani Sabha (Delhi, Jammu), Central Mahajan Sabha, Gandhi Seva Sadan, Arya Samaj, and J&K Social Sudhar Sabha, among others.
Though he is no longer with us, his name and legacy continue to live on in the hearts of the people. Dr. Kewal Krishan Gupta remains a symbol of unconditional service, and he is still fondly remembered by the people of the state, irrespective of caste or religion.
At the end I must say,
“Hajroon Saal Nargis , Apni Benori Per Rootie Hain Badi Muskil Se “ Chaman “ Mein Koi Deedwar “ Dr. Kewal Krishan Gupta” Jaisa Pada Hota Hain”
