Suspected Kashmiri terrorist arrested in West Bengal

Kolkata, Dec 22: A suspected member of the terrorist outfit ‘Tehreek e Mujahideen’ operating in Kashmir Valley was arrested from South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal on Sunday, according to police officials.

Javed Munshi, a resident of Srinagar, was apprehended near Canning Hospital by a joint team of Jammu and Kashmir Police and Bengal Police. The suspect, who claimed to be visiting a relative’s home in Canning town for personal reasons, had allegedly been involved in subversive activities in Kashmir and was wanted by Jammu and Kashmir Police for a significant period.

The ‘Tehreek e Mujahideen’, which is reportedly controlled from Pakistan, maintains connections with various militant groups in the region, as well as with groups in Pakistan and Bangladesh, police sources revealed. Javed’s relatives, however, expressed their lack of awareness regarding his alleged links with any terrorist organizations, stating that if the charges were found to be true, the law should take its course.

The arrested individual will soon be produced in Alipore court for transit remand, said police officials. This arrest follows the recent capture of eight suspected members of the Bangladesh-based terrorist outfit Ansar-al-Islam, who were allegedly planning to target the ‘Chicken’s Neck’, a crucial corridor linking Siliguri in West Bengal with the northeastern states.
