Supreme Court Directs HCs To Pronounce Reserved Orders Within Three Months

NEW DELHI, May 29: The Supreme Court on Friday directed all high courts across the country to pronounce judgements within three months of reserving orders, observing that delays cause irreparable loss to litigants.

A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Baghchi stressed the need for speedy disposal of cases, especially those involving personal liberty.

The apex court said orders in bail applications should ordinarily be pronounced on the same day. If the order is reserved, it must be delivered and uploaded by the next day.

Issuing a series of directions, the bench further ordered that bail or sentence suspension orders should be communicated to jail authorities immediately after pronouncement to ensure prompt release of undertrials or convicts.

The court said the release process should preferably be completed on the same day or, at the latest, by the following day.

The Supreme Court observed that unnecessary delays in pronouncing orders adversely affect litigants and undermine timely delivery of justice. (Agencies)
