India May Receive Below Normal Monsoon Rainfall This Year: IMD

NEW DELHI, May 29: India is likely to receive 90 per cent of the long period average (LPA) rainfall during the Southwest monsoon season this year, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday in its second monsoon forecast.

According to the weather office, Northeast India is expected to receive normal rainfall, while most other parts of the country may witness below normal rainfall during the monsoon season.

The IMD’s latest forecast marks a slight downward revision from its first prediction issued on April 13, when it had projected rainfall at 92 per cent of the long period average.

The Southwest monsoon is crucial for India’s agriculture sector and overall economy, as it provides the majority of annual rainfall across the country. (Agencies)
