The SIT is headed by a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) and will examine the circumstances of the August 21 firing inside a physiotherapy centre, as well as the alleged role of three suspended police officers.

Inspector Deepak Pathania and PSIs Wasim Bhatti and Rohit Sharma were suspended for allegedly attempting to misrepresent the incident as a road accident. In their absence, SI Noor Hussain and ASI Devinder Kumar have been appointed in charge of Police Station Channi Himmat and Police Post Sainik Colony, respectively.

Among its early actions, the SIT facilitated the discharge of Fatima Akil, sister of the deceased Mehjabeen Akil Sheikh, from Government Medical College Jammu for questioning. Jaspreet Kour of Ludhiana, the second injured woman, remains missing since the attack.
