New Delhi: The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana has achieved a significant milestone, with over 6.85 lakh solar rooftop installations completed since its launch in February 2024. The scheme is on track to surpass a decade’s worth of solar growth in just one year, with installations already reaching 86% of the total installations made in the previous decade.
The scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to install 1 crore rooftop solar systems in residential households by March 2027, with a budget of Rs 75,021 crore. The demand for solar installations has been particularly high in the 3-5 kW load segment, which accounts for 77% of the total installations. Additionally, 14% of the installations have been in the higher-than-5 kW segment.
Gujarat has recorded the highest number of installations under the initiative, with 2.86 lakh units, followed by Maharashtra with 1.26 lakh installations, and Uttar Pradesh with 53,423 installations. Other states like Tripura, Jharkhand, Arunachal Pradesh, and Manipur have also seen an increase in installations.
So far, around 1.45 crore registrations have been completed under the scheme, which is expected to save the government Rs 75,000 crore annually in electricity costs. The initiative offers a subsidy of up to 40% to households, making solar energy more affordable.
To support the program at the grassroots level, Urban Local Bodies and Panchayats have been incentivized to promote rooftop solar systems in their areas, contributing to job creation, reduced power bills, and increased income for households.
