New Delhi: The Winter Session of Parliament in India will take place from November 25 to December 20, 2024. This marks the first Parliament after four state assembly elections, including the first in a decade in Jammu and Kashmir. The BJP secured a victory in Haryana for a historic third successive term. The President has approved the proposal for summoning both Houses of Parliament for the Winter Session, 2024, subject to parliamentary business exigencies. The third and fourth elections will be held in Maharashtra and Jharkhand next week. A special event commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Constitution will be held on November 26, or Constitution Day.
The Centre is expected to introduce the Waqf (Amendment) Bill during the Winter Session, which has led to opposition leaders expressing reservations. Opposition members of the Waqf JPC have threatened to disassociate from the panel, accusing its chairperson and BJP leader Jagdambika Pal of “bulldozing the proceedings” and “stonewalling” them.
Big-ticket bills likely to be tabled or debated may include provisions for the government’s ambitious ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal. A committee led by former President Ram Nath Kovind cleared the way forward in March, proposing simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
Another major row likely to headline the Winter Session is the ongoing diplomatic row between India and Canada.
