Over 3 lakh houses constructed under PMAY in J&K: Minister

Jammu Tawi: Minister for Rural Development and Panchayati Raj, Javid Ahmad Dar, informed the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Monday that over three lakh ‘pucca’ houses have been constructed in the past two years under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

In response to a starred question by BJP’s Balwant Singh Mankotia, Dar revealed that a total of 3,04,544 houses had been completed under the PMAY-G scheme as of March 18, 2025. Of these, 2,60,124 were in Jammu, and 44,420 were in Kashmir. The total number of houses sanctioned under the scheme was 2,86,057 in Jammu and 48,806 in Kashmir.

The minister further explained that a fresh survey is underway to ensure that all eligible households are covered under the scheme.

Breaking down the distribution of completed houses, Dar stated that Rajouri district had the highest number of completed houses at 55,829, followed by Poonch (46,752), Ramban (31,714), and Doda (28,097). In Kashmir, Anantnag topped the list with 9,999 houses, followed by Kupwara (9,775) and Baramulla (5,534).

In response to a question by Congress legislator Irfan Hafiz Lone, Dar confirmed that landless PMAY beneficiaries are being allotted five marlas of state land to help them avail of the housing assistance.

Additionally, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, in a written reply to an unstarred question by National Conference legislator Khurshid Ahmad, informed the assembly that 1,288 houses were destroyed in fire incidents across Jammu and Kashmir over the past two years. Of these, 574 houses were gutted in 2023-24, and 714 in 2024-25.

The maximum number of houses were gutted in Kishtwar (107), followed by Kupwara (97) and Kulgam (64). A compensation of Rs 1.30 lakh is provided for each completely gutted house under SDRF norms.

The government continues to focus on addressing the housing needs and challenges faced by the residents, ensuring that more beneficiaries are supported under various schemes like PMAY.
