Major landslide in Himachal Pradesh blocks key highway, isolating local villages

A massive landslide occurred along Highway 707 close to the town of Shillai in Pradesh's Sirmaur district on Monday evening. The landslide brought down huge volumes of debris, completely blocking the artery road in the area.

National Highway 707 is a busy route that connects Shillai to other major towns in the region like Nahan and Paonta Sahib. The blockage has severely impacted transportation as numerous passenger buses and other vehicles remain stranded. Some tomato-laden trucks have also been left stuck in the harsh conditions, resulting in significant losses to farmers.

It is reported that the landslide was triggered due to excavation work being carried out by a private construction company to widen the road. Local sources allege that unstable hillsides were compromised by deep cutting of stones for a nearby crusher plant.

The debris blockade has isolated over a dozen gram panchayats across Sirmaur, and Uttarakhand districts. Emergency service vehicles going to Nerwa, Chopal and other areas now have to take lengthy detours of up to 100 extra kilometers to navigate around the slide-hit area.

While machinery was eventually deployed to clear the road on Tuesday morning, traffic is not expected to be restored for some time as ongoing monsoon rains could further compound the clearing operations. The disruption has cut off key linkages between communities in the region at a time when public transportation is crucial.

Local residents have expressed anger over the company's delayed response and the potential environmental effects of their construction practices. With more rain forecast, safety concerns surrounding ongoing development projects in landslide-prone zones have also come to the fore.
