The reports shared by the Union Health Ministry on the Adverse Events Following Immunisation (AEFIs) across the country are encouraging as a total of 3,81,305 persons have been vaccinated for COVID-19 since the nationwide inoculation drive on January 16.
The Health Ministry official, on Monday, said that a cumulative of ‘580 Adverse Events Following Immunisation (AEFIs) have been reported across the country after the vaccination drive began on January 16. Seven of these cases have been hospitalised the Health Ministry said in its briefing on the matter.
The incident of such a low ratio of adverse effect does not sound alarming keeping in view even the normal approved medicines and drugs are advised to be having some side effect and allergies to different persons.
AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria, who also volunteered for first dose of inoculation, on Monday allayed apprehensions about the coronavirus vaccines and assured that the side-effects will not result in death of the beneficiary.
The nationwide Covid vaccination drive had commenced on January 16 and a total of 447 adverse events following immunisation (AEFI) were reported during the first two days, with most of them being minor along with three cases of hospitalisation.
“Even if a person takes Crocin or Paracetamol, they may develop allergic reactions. There is nothing to worry about. There is no side-effect which would result in death,” Dr Guleria said.
He added, “Main side-effects are body ache, fever, pain at injection site which subside in 1-2 days and take place in less than 10 per cent of people. If the side-effects are severe, there could be skin rashes, nausea, difficulty in breathing.”
The AIIMS Director urged the people to come forward to get vaccinated if they want India to come out of the Covid-19 pandemic, decrease the mortality rate, bring the economy back on track and reopen schools.
According to the official, Delhi reported three cases of hospitalisation. Of these, two have been discharged and one with symptoms of fainting are under observation at Max Hospital, Patparganj. In Uttarakhand, one of the individuals who took the vaccine is stable, while the other one is under observation at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh. One beneficiary is under observation in Chhattisgarh and two in Karnataka. “No case of serious/severe AEFI attributable to vaccination till date,” he added.
1.48 lakh people administered vaccine on Monday in nine states. According to the data, a total of 3,81,305 beneficiaries have been vaccinated for COVID-19 since the nationwide inoculation drive on January 16.
The vaccination drive was launched across the country on January 16, almost two weeks after the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) gave a go-ahead for two vaccines – COVAXIN by Bharat Biotech and Covishield by Serum Institute of India (SII).
The medical specialists have observed that if this AEFI remains low, which otherwise also attributable to other vaccinations, it would infuse further public confidence and a positive impact on the World’s biggest ongoing vaccination drive in India to end the Covid-19 pandemic.
