Ladakh takes the lead with India’s first hydrogen fuel buses run with water

In a revolutionary move towards eco-friendly transportation, Ladakh is set to operate 's first fleet of hydrogen fuel cell buses. The Union Territory's Transport Department recently held discussions towards finalizing an agreement with NTPC Limited to introduce five zero-emission buses powered by hydrogen.

During the meeting chaired by Transport Secretary Amit Sharma, NTPC provided a presentation outlining their hydrogen projects in Ladakh. They shared timelines for deploying the fuel cell buses, which will uniquely run on water instead of fuel. This makes Ladakh the first region in the country to adopt this innovative water-based fuel .

Secretary Sharma engaged in constructive talks with the NTPC team about finalizing a Memorandum of Understanding. Key aspects discussed included collaboration details, bus availability, optimal routes and oxygen bottling support from NTPC's CSR initiatives. Integration of solar power and tariff considerations were also examined.

Welcoming the move, Sharma stated this landmark step will pave the way for sustainable transportation solutions in . The hydrogen buses will herald a new era of -friendly mobility while minimizing impacts. This aligns perfectly with Prime Minister Modi's vision to make Ladakh India's first Carbon Neutral state.
