New Delhi, Mar 17: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday criticized the government for failing to reduce petrol and diesel prices despite a significant drop in crude oil prices. In a sharp attack, Kharge accused the Modi government of continuing to burden the public with high fuel prices and “robbing” them, despite crude oil prices being at a 42-month low.
Kharge questioned how long the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would continue to collect “ransom” from the public. He pointed to a media report stating that crude oil prices had fallen, but fuel prices remained unchanged. Kharge took to social media, writing, “The price of crude oil has been continuously falling, but petrol and diesel prices have not been reduced… Modi government is robbing the public fearlessly!”
Further criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kharge claimed that the Prime Minister’s long podcasts, often referred to as “Mann Ki Baat,” failed to address the issue of inflation, which continues to burden the people. Kharge also pointed out that crude oil prices had decreased by 34% since May 2014, yet petrol and diesel prices remained high. He also highlighted the government’s massive tax collections, reaching Rs 36 lakh crore over the past decade, and demanded to know when the public could expect a reduction in fuel prices.
The statement reflects growing opposition concerns over fuel price hikes, despite a decline in international crude oil rates.
