Kashmir’s Higher Reaches See Season’s First Snow; More Forecasted

Srinagar, Oct 3: The higher reaches of Kashmir received the season’s first snowfall on Friday, with meteorological officials predicting more in the coming days.

Affarwat in Gulmarg, the famed ski resort in north Kashmir’s Baramulla, and Sinthan Top in Anantnag district in south Kashmir were among the locations that saw snowfall. Some plains areas, including Srinagar city and nearby regions, received light rainfall.

The Meteorological Department said an active western disturbance is expected to affect Jammu and Kashmir and adjoining areas from Sunday. “Under the influence of this system, widespread light to moderate rain or snow (in higher reaches) is expected from October 5 to 7, with peak activity from the night of October 5 to the morning of October 7,” the advisory stated.

The system is likely to bring moderate to heavy snowfall over higher reaches including Anantnag-Pahalgam, Kulgam, Sinthan Pass, Shopian, Pir Ki Gali, Sonamarg-Zojila, Bandipora-Razdan Pass, Gulmarg, and Kupwara-Sadhna Pass. Light snowfall is expected over middle reaches, while plains areas may see moderate to heavy rainfall, the department added. (Agencies)
