Srinagar: A 45-year-old social activist, Ghulam Rasool Magray, was shot dead by suspected terrorists inside his home in Kandi Khas area of north Kashmir’s Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir late Saturday night, officials said.
According to police, Magray was critically injured after being fired upon and was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival. The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but authorities have launched a massive manhunt to trace the assailants.
Jammu and Kashmir Police have registered a case and begun an investigation. Security forces are treating the incident as part of a broader pattern of militant activity in the region, which has seen increased counter-insurgency operations following the recent Pahalgam attack.
Sources revealed that Magray’s brother, Ghulam Mohideen Magray, is a known Lashkar-e-Taiba operative currently based in Pakistan-occupied Jammu Kashmir, raising suspicions about possible militant motives or internal links.
The killing comes amid heightened security actions in the Valley. Since Saturday evening, security forces have demolished three houses belonging to known militants using explosives in Shopian, Bandipora, and Pulwama.
Additionally, two Over Ground Workers (OGWs) from Budgam – Tahir Ahmad Kumar and Shabir Ahmad Ganai – were detained under the Public Safety Act. Police stated that the pair were involved in providing logistical support to terrorist groups and influencing local youth to join banned organisations.
Authorities said these actions reflect a tougher stance against anti-national elements and efforts to dismantle terrorist networks across the Valley.
