NEW DELHI, Jul 20: The Supreme Court on Monday directed the Union Government to constitute a committee within two weeks to frame uniform guidelines on post-retirement facilities for former Chief Justices and judges of High Courts, observing that such benefits currently vary widely across States.
A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana issued the direction while hearing a writ petition concerning security and other post-retirement facilities for retired High Court judges.
The Court noted significant disparities in the availability of essential amenities, including domestic help, drivers, telephone facilities, medical reimbursement and government accommodation, and said there was no justification for such variations among States.
During the hearing, Chief Justice Surya Kant questioned whether the financial assistance provided by some States for security arrangements was sufficient. “In Rs. 45,000-50,000, is it possible to get a driver and security officer?” he asked.
Pointing to the lack of uniformity, the Bench suggested that the Centre constitute a committee to formulate common norms, warning that the Court would otherwise have to establish one itself.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Bench that the Centre had no objection to the proposal and would take the necessary steps.
The Court directed the committee to be formed within two weeks and asked it to submit its recommendations to both the Union Government and the Supreme Court within three months. (Agencies)
