J&K: 2 suspected LeT terrorists gunned down during infiltration bid in Poonch

Jammu, July 30: In a significant counter-infiltration success, two suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorists were killed by Indian Army troops while attempting to cross the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district, officials confirmed on Wednesday.

Codenamed Operation Shivshakti, the operation was launched during the intervening night after troops observed suspicious movement near the Degwar sector in the Maldivalan area. A fierce gunfight ensued, resulting in the deaths of both infiltrators.

According to the Army’s White Knight Corps, “In a successful anti-infiltration operation, alert troops of the Indian Army eliminated two terrorists attempting to infiltrate across the Line of Control. Swift action and accurate firepower thwarted the nefarious designs. Three weapons have been recovered.”

The operation was supported by synchronised intelligence inputs from Indian intelligence agencies and the Jammu and Kashmir Police. A search launched at first light on Wednesday confirmed the elimination of both terrorists.

Earlier, troops on ambush duty, based on prior intelligence of a possible infiltration attempt, detected movement along the LoC fence and challenged the intruders. The terrorists opened fire, triggering a prolonged encounter.

This encounter comes just two days after security forces gunned down three terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack during an operation in a Srinagar forest.

Search operations in the Poonch sector are still underway, officials added.  (Agencies)
