In a bid to strengthen social connections online, Instagram is reportedly testing a map feature that will allow users to share their real-time locations with friends. According to sources, the photo-sharing platform has been working on this new addition privately since early this year, with initial tests now underway in select international markets.
If rolled out widely, the tool will display text or video status updates pinned to user's actual locations on an interactive map view. However, these location posts can only be viewed by mutual followers or individuals added to one's “Close Friends” list, ensuring privacy. Friends' shared spots will also appear together for an easier glance at what they're all up to and where.
The opt-in tool seems geared towards helping users stay connected to close circles by sharing what locales they're at. It follows a similar function introduced years ago by Snapchat, but Meta-owned Instagram aims to focus more on friend-only access instead of complete public visibility of spots. Safety remains a priority in product development as always, according to company representatives.
More details regarding how long location updates may remain visible or additional privacy controls are still emerging as Instagram continues experimenting. Only time will tell if the concept gains widespread usage, but it provides yet another avenue for the platform to draw inspiration from competitors while fueling engagement between friends online.
