IndiGo introduces premium cabin experience on key domestic route
In an attempt to woo business travellers and cater to increasing demand, the country's largest airline IndiGo has announced the launch of its new business class product called ‘Stretch' from mid-November. Dubbed as a ‘tailor-made' offering, IndiGoStretch will debut on the high-traffic Delhi-Mumbai route, considered the backbone of domestic aviation in India.
Stretch will provide 12 luxurious leather seats arranged in a 2-2 configuration for utmost comfort. Passengers can look forward to finer details like gourmet meals conceptualized by the prestigious Oberoi group of hotels. IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers believes the premium experience will fulfill the evolving needs of Indian flyers and provide an affordable option for many seeking quality travel options.
While some see this as a strategic shift, IndiGo has stressed that core economy fares will remain competitive. The business class addition is aimed at cashing in on higher yields without compromising efficiency. Initial response suggests strong demand for the new product on India's premier route carrying both business and leisure travelers daily.
Competition from full-service carriers offering varied experience levels is said to be a factor. As social and economic progress boosts spending power, analysts feel the timing is right for IndiGo to tap the premium segment and diversify revenue streams. International routes will likely see similar upgrades over the long run as the airline readies widebody jets.
After dominating the local market, IndiGo is now focusing on global expansion. The launch of Stretch demonstrates intent to remain relevant across customer categories on key domestic sectors and eventually worldwide. With product differentiation handled innovatively, India's aviation leader looks set to sustain its lead while enhancing service quality for all travelers.
