New Delhi, May 20: India has reported a slight yet notable rise in COVID-19 cases, with 257 active infections recorded nationwide as of May 19, 2025, according to official government data. The increase comes amid fresh waves of infections in Singapore and Hong Kong, driven by new Omicron subvariants such as JN.1.
Kerala currently leads the country with 69 active cases, followed by Maharashtra with 44 and Tamil Nadu with 34. Other states reporting new infections include Karnataka, Gujarat, Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Sikkim. Mumbai’s KEM Hospital has confirmed two COVID-related deaths, raising localized health concerns.
Health experts from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) have stated that the situation remains under control. They attributed the containment to robust surveillance systems, early detection protocols, and active response strategies. However, they stressed the need for continued vigilance, especially in densely populated and high-risk areas.
Globally, Singapore has witnessed a 28% surge in weekly cases, while Hong Kong has recorded 31 COVID-related deaths—its highest in a year. These trends have prompted Indian health authorities to advise the public against complacency.
Officials are urging citizens to adhere to basic preventive measures such as hand hygiene, mask usage in crowded places, and vaccination updates, particularly for the elderly and immunocompromised.
While the current rise is not alarming, authorities stress that sustained public cooperation and monitoring are crucial to preventing a potential resurgence of the virus in India.
