Srinagar, Jan 17: The Meteorological Department (MeT) Srinagar on Saturday forecast a fresh wet spell in Jammu and Kashmir from January 19, warning of the possibility of heavy rain and snowfall in a few areas of the Union Territory.
MeT Director Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said January 17 and 18 are likely to remain partly to generally cloudy, with chances of light snowfall over isolated higher reaches.
He said weather conditions are expected to deteriorate from January 19 to 20, turning generally cloudy with light to moderate rain or snowfall at scattered to fairly widespread places across the region.
According to the forecast, January 21 will see partly to generally cloudy skies, with the possibility of light snowfall at isolated higher elevations.
The MeT further said a significant change in weather is expected from the evening of January 22. From January 23 to 24, generally cloudy conditions with light to moderate rain or snowfall are likely at most places. There is a possibility of heavy rain or snowfall in a few districts of the Chenab Valley, Pir Panjal range and parts of south Kashmir during this period.
On January 26, light rain or snowfall is expected at scattered places, the Director added.
Issuing an advisory, the department warned of heavy rain and snowfall in some areas of the Chenab Valley, Pir Panjal range and south Kashmir, along with gusty winds at a few places and the risk of landslides in vulnerable zones.
Travellers have been advised to plan their journeys cautiously, especially on January 23 and 24, and adhere strictly to traffic and administrative advisories. Farmers have also been advised to suspend agricultural operations during the forecasted wet spell. (KNC)
