New Delhi, Dec 21: Former Supreme Court judge Madan B Lokur has been appointed as the chairperson of the United Nations Internal Justice Council. His term will run until November 12, 2028.
In a communication dated December 19, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres informed Justice Lokur of his appointment, highlighting that he would lead a distinguished group of jurists in the council.
The full list of members includes Carmen Artigas (Uruguay), Rosalie Balkin (Australia), Stefan Brezina (Austria), and Jay Pozenel (USA), with Justice Lokur serving as chairperson.
Justice Lokur, born in 1953, was appointed to the Supreme Court of India on June 4, 2012, and retired on December 30, 2018, upon reaching the age of superannuation. In 2019, he made history by becoming the first Indian judge appointed to the non-resident panel of the Supreme Court of Fiji.
