Mar 4: In a groundbreaking step for inclusivity, the Border Security Force
(BSF) has become the first to enlist a female sniper. Sub-Inspector Suman Kumari recently completed the elite sniper course at the Central
School of Weapons and Tactics (CSWT) in Indore, emerging as the first woman to earn the distinguished “instructor grade” designation.
Stationed in Punjab and witnessing cross-border sniper threats firsthand, SI Kumari volunteered for additional training after observing the crucial role snipers play in border defense. Despite being the sole woman among 56 male classmates, she demonstrated
unmatched resolve throughout the demanding eight-week program. Her instructors praised Kumari's strong work ethic, keen focus under
pressure, and natural ability to conceal herself for optimal strategic position – key traits required of any special forces sniper.
Hailing from humble beginnings in Himachal Pradesh's Mandi district, Kumari broke through gender barriers to prove herself as the top student in camouflaging, concentration, and other physically taxing exercises. One teacher noted most male trainees fail to complete the punishing regimen, but Kumari consistently led the pack through pure
determination. Her success making history has already inspired more females to join India's military ranks.
Under the watchful eye of CSWT Inspector General Bhaskar Singh Rawat, Kumari rose to the level of instructor – a premier achievement rarely attained on the first attempt. Her accomplishment marks a pivotal step
toward a more inclusive BSF on the frontlines of national security. Kumari's trailblazing efforts will empower future generations of women seeking careers in service to the nation.
