Estonia eyes cyber security cooperation with India to tackle increasing digital threats

As cyber attacks continue to rise globally, Estonia is exploring opportunities for partnership with India to strengthen both countries’ cyber security infrastructure. Estonia, being geographically proximate to Russia, frequently faces cyber attacks from state and non-state actors in the region. Similarly, India is exposed to growing cyber threats from its neighbor China.

Recognizing the common challenges, top Estonian officials have emphasized the potential for collaboration with India. During recent interactions, Estonia’s Secretary General Jonatan Vseviov highlighted key areas like digital services, education and joint cyber security exercises. As one of the world’s most digitally advanced nations, Estonia is keen to share its expertise in developing robust, resilient digital systems and training cyber security professionals.

India too is no stranger to such attacks and sees merit in cooperating with like-minded partners on this critical issue. In fact, an Indian team recently participated as observers in NATO’s largest ever cyber drill hosted by Estonia, signaling intent on both sides. Both countries have also implemented national digital identity programs which could provide a foundation for deeper cooperation.

While economic ties are expanding, cyber security engagement is important given the evolving threat landscape. With its membership in NATO, Estonia also provides an opportunity for Indian defense startups to access new markets. As digital technologies progress globally, collaborative efforts between strategic partners will be vital to ensure citizens’ security in the virtual world. Looking ahead, discussions are underway for Estonia and India to organically grow their mutually beneficial partnership on cyber issues.
