Demand echoes in Assembly for judicial probe into attack on Farooq

Jammu Tawi, Mar 28: The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Saturday unanimously condemned the assassination attempt on Farooq Abdullah, with members across party lines demanding a time-bound judicial probe by a sitting High Court judge.

During a two-hour discussion, legislators described the incident as a serious security lapse and called for strict action against the accused, with some urging that he be treated as a terrorist. Abdullah, a former chief minister, narrowly escaped unhurt on March 11 when a gunman opened fire at close range in Jammu’s Greater Kailash area.

Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather said the matter had been taken up at the highest levels, noting that Amit Shah and Manoj Sinha had spoken to Abdullah after the incident. He assured the House that the investigation would be carried to its logical conclusion.

Members expressed concern over inadequate security at the venue, questioning how the attacker managed to reach so close to a senior leader. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has already been constituted by police to probe the attack.

Participating in the debate, leaders from BJP, National Conference, PDP, Congress, and other parties stressed the need for accountability, transparency, and stronger security arrangements for public representatives. Several members also called for uncovering any larger conspiracy behind the attack.

The House emphasised that such incidents threaten democratic values and public safety, urging authorities to ensure a thorough investigation and prevent recurrence.
