The debate around MS Dhoni’s future with Chennai Super Kings continues to brew, as knee issues threaten to cut short the legendary captain’s illustrious IPL career. However, CSK officials seem unwilling to part ways with Thala just yet.
Former India wicketkeeper Robin Uthappa fuelled speculation during a recent podcast, stating CSK would allow Dhoni to play even while confined to a wheelchair, highlighting their commitment to the franchise icon. “Get off the wheelchair, bat, and then go back,” quipped Uthappa.
While Dhoni’s prolific batting is unaffected, keeping wickets has become a struggle on account of deteriorating knees. Uthappa feels once Dhoni can no longer perform wicketkeeping duties to his standards, retirement may be on the cards.
Eoin Morgan also weighed in, saying Dhoni would bow out gracefully once he feels he can’t contribute at the desired level. “He writes his own script” noted the England legend about Dhoni’s self-awareness.
With CSK kickstarting their IPL 2024 campaign next week, Dhoni’s availability for the opener is among the most anticipated updates. Judging by the franchise’s never-say-die attitude towards its talismanic captain, they may stretch the rubber on his glittering career beyond belief if he’s willing to roll!
