Crime Rising, Police Must Rise Too

There is a dire need that men in Khaki in Jammu region should gird up loins to tackle crime befittingly as this scourge has increased out of proportions in this part of the Union Territory. What is more important for the police is to stop crime rather than investigating and taking on criminals head after the wrongful incident has taken place.

No one can deny that Jammu and Kashmir Police has been doing a commendable job in containing the criminal activities but looking at the expansion of the Jammu City and increase in the population in last more than one decade curbing the crime has become a challenging task as in the recent times Jammu region has witnessed many crimes which earlier used to happen in the big metro cities of the country.

The recent was the murder of a man on city outskirts by burning him alive, shootouts and attack on cops had also become a common scenario in the recent past making it necessary for the police to pull up the socks and get ready for the challenging tasks round the clock. As far as terrorism is concerned, the cops had played a significant role in containing militancy in J&K and deserve kudos for the same but now the main objective is to effectively curb the crime in Jammu region which has lately seen an upward graph. One can say that at this moment of time, it has become imperative for the Jammu Police to strengthen its infrastructure, strategies and mindset with the fast-changing nature of crime.

The time has changed because conventional crimes like pick-pocketing, black marketing of cinema tickets, small thefts, etc have become bygone practices as these days, what is common is drug peddling, cyber frauds, organized gangs, interstate criminals, daylight robberies, vehicle thefts, chain & purse snatchings, etc.

Therefore, improving the functioning of the police department has become indispensable. Only with proactive measures and modern policing tools can the JKP stay ahead of criminals and provide a sense of security to the common people.

In this context, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Jammu, Joginder Singh has aptly convened a comprehensive crime and security review meeting to carry out a detailed assessment of the crime scenario and overall security preparedness across Jammu district. The SSP has directed all units to identify drug peddlers, organised networks and gangsters, and take uncompromising action against all entities responsible for rise in crime.

The step taken by the police is timely and such interactions should be made a regular affair to combat crime with efficacy and alertness. All said and done, the need of the hour is sustained vigilance, active policing and a result-oriented approach.
