NEW DELHI, Aug 12: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday announced the formation of a three-member committee to investigate allegations against Delhi High Court judge Justice Yashwant Varma in the high-profile “cash-at-home” case.
The panel comprises Justice Arvind Kumar (Supreme Court), Justice Maninder Mohan Srivastava (Chief Justice, Madras High Court), and senior advocate B.V. Acharya (Karnataka High Court). It will submit its findings “as early as possible,” Birla said, adding that the impeachment motion—signed by 146 MPs—will remain pending until the report is received.
The move follows the discovery of a large sum of burnt and partially burnt currency at Justice Varma’s residence in March after a fire incident. A Supreme Court-appointed in-house panel earlier found Varma guilty of misconduct, a finding upheld last week when the apex court dismissed his challenge to the report.
Citing the “serious and shocking” nature of the allegations and the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court’s observations, Birla said a thorough probe was essential before further action is taken. (Agencies)
