Jammu, Mar 27: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislators staged a protest inside the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly on Friday, demanding the establishment of a National Law University (NLU) in Jammu as the second phase of the Budget Session commenced.
The BJP MLAs raised slogans and held placards while seeking clarity from the government on the proposed location of the university, saying Jammu has long been deprived of premier educational institutions and called for an immediate decision. The protest briefly disrupted normal Assembly proceedings.
The second leg of the Budget Session opened amid protests, with opposition parties expected to press the government on poll promises, regional concerns, and restoration of statehood.
Meanwhile, Sajjad Lone questioned the delay in notification for establishing the NLU in Ompora, Budgam, Kashmir, as assured by CM Omar Abdullah in October last year. He noted that if J&K opts for the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), already conducted nationwide, starting classes in 2026 may become impossible.
The authority to establish the university rests with the Government of Jammu and Kashmir, and the BJP legislators urged immediate action to set up the institution in Jammu.
