Alec Baldwin Finds Relief as Manslaughter Case Dismissed in Fatal ‘Rust’ Shooting

Top Hollywood actor Alec Baldwin broke down in tears after a New Mexico judge dismissed involuntary manslaughter charges against him in a surprising mid-trial ruling. Baldwin had faced 18 months in prison if convicted for the 2021 accidental fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the Western film “Rust.”

Last Friday, Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer halted proceedings and dismissed the case, citing prosecutorial misconduct over withholding of key evidence from Baldwin’s defense. District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies stated she was disappointed the case did not reach a jury conclusion, but respected the judge’s decision.

The prosecution’s case was already facing challenges after Judge Sommer barred discussion of Baldwin’s role as a producer on “Rust”. Then, during testimony, it emerged prosecutors had not disclosed ammunition brought to authorities that could be pertinent to the shooting. Baldwin’s lawyers swiftly moved for dismissal, arguing this constituted a violation of due process.

Judge Sommer agreed the late evidence disclosure had unfairly “impeded the effective use of evidence” and impacted a fair trial. She concluded dismissal was appropriate given the prosecution conduct fell so close to bad faith. Baldwin was seen breaking down in emotion after hugging his attorneys and wife of 13 years, Hilaria. He then swiftly left the courthouse without addressing media.

While the criminal case against Baldwin now concludes, civil lawsuits from Hutchins’ family and crew remain ongoing. The accidental shooting and its fallout had endangered Baldwin’s long acting career and seen him face potential imprisonment. But with criminal charges dismissed, the acclaimed Hollywood veteran can take some solace in being legally vindicated over the tragic events on the “Rust” production.
