The Jathedar (head priest) of Akal Takht Sahib has requested a written reply from Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal regarding allegations made against the party leadership.
Giani Raghbir Singh, who serves as the Jathedar, has asked Mr. Badal to appear before the Sikh temporal seat of power within the next 15 days. During this meeting, Mr. Badal must submit a written response addressing claims raised by some senior Akali leaders.
These SAD members, including Prem Singh Chandumajra, Surjit Singh Rakhra and Jagir Kaur, had presented a letter of apology to the Jathedar last month. In their statement, they acknowledged mistakes made during the party’s governance between 2007-2017. Specific issues mentioned were the controversies around exonerating a dera head, failure to punish perpetrators of sacrilege cases, and not delivering justice to victims during that time.
By summoning the SAD president, the Akal Takht seeks to understand the party’s perspective on these serious issues. Responding will allow Mr. Badal to provide transparency to Sikhs on the events of the past decade. How the leadership addresses these concerns will impact the faith and trust Sikhs place in their political representation.
The Jathedar’s move highlights the Akal Takht’s role in upholding principles of Saraopsi within the Sikh political sphere. With the next state elections approaching, it aims to clear the air around a tumultuous period for the community. Mr. Badal’s timely response can aid open dialogue and reconciliation if needed.
