Adani eyes Kenya's airports with new subsidiary
In a move signaling its ambition to expand internationally, Adani Enterprises has set up a wholly-owned subsidiary in Kenya called Airports Infrastructure PLC. According to a filing by the company, the new arm aims to take over, operate and manage airport facilities in the East African nation.
Adani, which already operates seven airports across major Indian cities, has its sights set on Kenya's lucrative airport sector. Sources familiar with the development said the infrastructure giant is in active discussions to invest in the key Nairobi airport. If negotiations are successful, it would mark Adani's first foray outside India in the airport industry.
Besides gateway to flights from Africa and beyond, the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi handles significant cargo traffic. This presents an attractive investment opportunity for Adani as it aims to diversify beyond India's borders.
With its proven expertise in developing world-class aviation infrastructure back home, Adani is well positioned take the airport business global. The new Kenyan subsidiary will look to leverage the group's expertise and experience to enhance service quality and efficiency if given the opportunity.
Beyond Kenya, Adani also incorporated a subsidiary in China as it evaluates overseas expansion avenues across different sectors and geographies. Only time will tell what airports and regions become part of the group's outreach beyond Indian skies in the coming years.
