Heavy rain alert from July 19 to 23

Jammu Tawi, Jul 18: The Meteorological Department (MeT) has issued a heavy rainfall alert for Jammu and Kashmir from July 19 to 23, warning of flash floods, landslides, mudslides and waterlogging, with the Jammu region expected to receive the heaviest downpour.

According to the MeT, July 18 will remain generally hot and humid, with brief spells of rain or intense thundershowers at scattered places during the late afternoon, night and early morning hours.

A prolonged wet spell is forecast from July 19 to 23, with generally cloudy skies and intermittent rain and thundershowers likely at most places across the Union Territory. The department has warned of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several districts during this period.

Heavy to very heavy rain is expected in Jammu, Kathua, Samba, Rajouri, Doda, Ramban and Kishtwar, while Reasi and Udhampur are likely to witness extremely heavy rainfall, particularly during late afternoon, evening and night or early morning hours.

The weather is expected to improve from July 24 to 27, with only isolated spells of rain or thundershowers forecast at a few places.

The MeT has cautioned that the intense rainfall may trigger flash floods, landslides and mudslides in vulnerable areas. It also warned of a significant rise in water levels in rivers and streams, increasing the risk of minor flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas.

Authorities have advised residents to remain alert, plan travel carefully and stay updated on weather advisories. Farmers have also been urged to suspend agricultural operations between July 19 and 23 in view of the expected adverse weather conditions. (Agencies)
